Every winter, Jamshedpur—the steel city of Jharkhand—transforms into a vibrant tapestry of indigenous colors, sounds, and voices. This transformation is driven by Samvaad, a pan-India tribal conclave organized by the Tata Steel Foundation. Bringing together thousands of tribal representatives, artists, musicians, scholars, and artisans from over 150 tribes across India, Samvaad is a celebration of tribal identity, dialogue, and heritage.

For Purple Group Ventures, participating in Samvaad was a defining milestone. It was not just an exhibition of beautiful products; it was an immersive learning experience that laid the foundations for what is now our Purple Stories initiative.

What Makes Samvaad Unique?

Unlike conventional craft fairs, Samvaad is built on a philosophy of respect and mutual learning. It provides a platform where tribal communities can discuss their shared challenges—such as language preservation, climate-induced changes in raw material availability, and the digital divide—while celebrating their cultural resilience.

From the traditional tribal cuisines cooked in clay pots to the haunting melodies of traditional instruments, Samvaad is an authentic sensory journey. For our team, the highlight was the craft pavilion, a bustling hub where master artisans showcased their skills in wood carving, metalwork (Dokra), pottery, and natural fiber weaving.

Connecting with the Masters of the Craft

During the conclave, we spent hours sitting with artisans from the Mahli Tribe of Jharkhand and the Bondo and Gadaba communities of Odisha. We listened to their stories, watched their hands move with effortless precision, and gained a deep appreciation for the mathematics and storytelling embedded in their weave patterns.

We also discussed the economic realities they face. Many artisans spoke of the difficulties they encounter in marketing their products:

  • Intermediaries: Middlemen who buy products at negligible rates in weekly village markets (haats) and sell them at premium prices in cities, leaving the artisans with very little profit.
  • Urban Market Trends: A lack of information about contemporary home decor preferences, which makes it hard for artisans to design functional pieces for urban spaces.
  • Logistical Hurdles: Shipping individual orders from remote forest villages is economically unviable and technically complex.

These conversations sparked a question in our minds: How can we use our technology and design resources to bridge this gap?

The Birth of Purple Stories

We realized that tribal artisans did not need charity; they needed direct, transparent access to a premium market that appreciated their craftsmanship. They needed a partner who could help adapt traditional weaving methods to modern home requirements without diluting their cultural identity.

This realization led to the creation of Purple Stories.

We decided to build a digital-first catalog that connects urban conscious consumers directly with tribal artisans. We work closely with weaver cooperatives in Jharkhand and Odisha, introducing contemporary product designs (like structured storage baskets, table runners, and contemporary toys) while retaining the authentic, chemical-free, hand-woven techniques.

Looking Ahead

Our journey at Samvaad was a reminder of the rich wealth of indigenous knowledge that exists in India's tribal heartlands. It showed us that sustainable development is not about replacing traditional practices, but about empowering them with modern tools.

As we continue to expand the Purple Stories catalog, we carry the spirit of Samvaad with us.
